What is the significance of high triglyceride in serum?

High triglyceride levels are common in Diabetes melitus, obesity and Alcoholism. If the blood sugar is normal and there is no other risk factors a fasting glucose tolerance test should be performed as impaired glucose tolerance is so often associated with high serum triglyceride.Impaired GTT indicate the high chance of developing diabetes in near fuure.High triglyceride levels are independent risk factor for stroke and coronary heart disease.Very high levels are associated with pancreatitis. So dietary restriction of carbohydrate and fat is important in such patients.
Drugs useful are nicotinic acid ,fibrates and statins particularly atorvastatin.
Fish oil which contain plenty of omega 3 fatty acid also are helpful.
Fish oil if given in excess to children can elevate intracranial(INSIDE SKULL) pressure and lead to interactable headache.
